Police Speaks Tough On Killing of Petroleum Engineer in Juba

 

The South Sudan National Police Service has confirmed that investigations are still ongoing into the killing of engineer Conty Okot, who was murdered along the Custom–Rock City Road in Juba in January 2026. 

Authorities say progress has been made, but no final conclusions have yet been reached regarding those responsible for the fatal attack.

According to earlier reports, Engineer Okot was killed in the early hours of Monday, 19 January 2026, between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. while traveling in his official government vehicle. 

The incident, which took place in a busy route within the capital, shocked residents and raised concerns over growing insecurity targeting public officials.

Police spokesperson Maj. Gen. Daniel Justin stated that the case remains active, although he did not provide detailed updates on the current stage of investigations. 

He noted that investigators are still following leads but emphasized that no arrests have been publicly confirmed in connection with the engineer’s killing.

“Well, I don’t have detailed information on how far the case has gone, but I will follow it up and update you,” Maj. Gen. Justin told reporters, adding that the police remain committed to resolving the matter.

The spokesperson also highlighted other security incidents reported across different parts of the country. 

In the Bilyang area of Gumbo Shirkat in Juba, police are investigating another murder case where suspects have been identified but not yet arrested. 

Authorities say criminal activity in the area continues to pose challenges, particularly incidents involving theft and violence in rural and farming communities.

In separate cases, police confirmed a civilian shooting in Paloch, where the suspect has already been arrested and investigations are ongoing. 

Authorities also reported an ambush between Mangala and Mogiri in which a driver was shot and later died while being transported to hospital.

Additionally, law enforcement officials said they intercepted individuals in Renk accused of attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the town. 

Police also confirmed the reception of 31 South Sudanese nationals deported from Sudan and seven others returned from Egypt, all of whom were assessed upon arrival.

Maj. Gen. Justin noted that while most security situations remain under control, isolated criminal incidents continue to occur across various regions. 

Authorities have urged calm while investigations proceed and have assured the public that efforts to strengthen law enforcement remain ongoing.
