Nearly 8 Million South Sudanese Face Severe Hunger as Humanitarian Crisis Worsens

A new UN-backed humanitarian assessment has warned of a deepening food crisis in South Sudan, with an estimated 7.8 million people—about 56% of the population—expected to face high levels of acute food insecurity in the coming months.

The report, compiled with input from agencies including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Food Programme (WFP), and UNICEF, cautions that the situation could escalate into what it describes as an “irreversible humanitarian catastrophe” if urgent international intervention is not provided.

According to the findings, the crisis is being driven by a combination of prolonged conflict, displacement of communities, economic instability, and climate-related shocks such as floods and droughts.
