Former Speaker Jemma Nunu Kumba Breaks Silence After Removal, Thanks President Salva Kiir Mayardit

Former Speaker of South Sudan’s Transitional National Legislative Assembly, Jemma Nunu Kumba, has publicly expressed gratitude to President Salva Kiir Mayardit following her recent removal from office.

In an appreciation letter dated April 8, 2026, Kumba thanked the President for the trust and confidence he placed in her during her tenure, which began in August 2021.

She made history as the first female Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, serving during a crucial period in the country’s political transition.

“I write to convey my deepest gratitude and sincere appreciation for the trust and confidence you placed in me to serve as the first female Speaker,” Kumba stated.

She described her time in office as both an honour and a significant responsibility, noting that she led Parliament at a time when South Sudan continues to navigate its path toward lasting peace, stability, and national unity.

According to Kumba, her leadership focused on strengthening legislative processes and supporting the broader peace agenda.

“It has been my profound honour to be entrusted with such responsibility at a time when our nation continues to navigate the path towards lasting peace, stability, and nation building,” she added.

Kumba also highlighted efforts undertaken during her tenure to improve the functionality and standards of Parliament.

She noted that reforms were aimed not only at enhancing the institution’s physical infrastructure but also at aligning its operations with regional legislative bodies.

“We have worked to improve not only the physical appearance of the institution but, more importantly, its functionality,” she said.

The former Speaker further extended her appreciation to Members of Parliament and parliamentary staff for their cooperation and commitment. She credited their collective efforts with advancing accountability, strengthening parliamentary practices, and ensuring smoother legislative operations.

Despite her removal, Kumba reaffirmed her dedication to public service, confirming that she will continue serving as a Member of Parliament.

She emphasized that nation-building is a shared responsibility and called on leaders across the political divide to prioritize unity, reconciliation, and development.

“As I continue to serve as a Member of Parliament, I am reminded that the responsibility to build our nation does not rest on any one office or individual,” she noted.

Kumba also pledged her continued loyalty to her political party and support for the government, stressing that unity and national interest remain key to moving the country forward.

Her remarks come at a time of ongoing political adjustments in South Sudan, as leaders seek to maintain momentum in the country’s fragile peace process.
